Who hates having disgusting, dirty, fragile nails? Me too, nothing worse than not being able to exhibit healthy looking nails. There was a point in time where I was quite the nail biter, it wasn’t until one of my aunts smacked my hand right into my gums causing them to bleed, let’s just say she felt it was a very disgusting habit. Ever since then – for her – I’ve focused on managing my nails and their health. 1.) I love to swim, one of the ways I like to stay active is swimming laps a few days a week. While a short amount of time in the water is fine, be sure to keep nails dry and clean. Having your nails in damp situations for prolonged periods of time can cause bacteria to grow under the nail and potential splitting. If you find your hands in these situations often I suggest – invest in some gloves to limit the moister around your hands. 2.) Good nail hygiene is a must. Trimmed and manicured hands and feet, in general, will go a long way for healthy nails. Cleaning under your nail and trimming excess nails will keep them protected. Remember, trim them with a clipper – do not trim them with your mouth, people around you find that disgusting. If you go the manicure or pedicure route, be sure they licensed technicians. Also, be sure they do not remove your cuticles, this can lead to infection. Make sure the technicians properly sterilize their tools to prevent the spread of infection. 3.) Be gentle! Your nails are very delicate, scrubbing them too rough can expose you to infection as well. Never use metal nail tools under the nail, this can cause separation from the skin underneath. Value health over length, as I said before, regular trimming is as important for your nails as it is for your hair. 4.) If you paint your nails, never forget to use a base coat. This protects the nail from being stained by the polish. Reading labels is also very important, not all polish is created equal. Stay away from toxic chemicals like dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde, and toluene because they can cause brittleness, splitting and cracking. And when purchasing nail polish remover, find a product that is acetone free. 5.) For you ladies, painting your nails and beautifying them is fun and makes you feel good, but they do need breaks. Save the nail art for the weekend – try to give your nails a break during the week. This will give them the opportunity to rest and repair. The last thing you want is to dry out your nails, going from one polish right into another is a bad idea. Dry nails lead to discoloration and even weakness. 6.) Healthy nails are a direct reflection of a healthy body. Practicing a healthy diet won’t only make you feel better and be healthier, it’s something that will reflect the health of your nails as well. Vitamins and minerals, protein, biotin, omega 3’s are all nutrients that will strengthen the health of your nails and you will get those nutrients in a healthy diet. Beans, fish, nuts will contain proteins and omega’s – fruits and vegetables will contain vitamins and minerals for stronger, clearer nails. Keratin and Biotin. Your nails are composed of laminated layers of a protein called Keratin. Biotin has been researched and suggested as a supplement to increase the health of your nails as well as your skin and hair. Finding a quality supplement containing these two ingredients as well as other vitamins and minerals can increase nail health as well.
